Chung Chi College was founded in October 1951 by representatives of Protestant Churches in Hong Kong to fill the need for a local institution of higher learning that would be both Chinese and Christian. In 1955 it was formally incorporated under an ordinance of the Hong Kong Government. In 1956 the College moved to its present site in the New Territories, in the beautiful Ma Liu Shui Valley. Between 1959 and 1963, the College received the bulk of its funds from the Hong Kong Government. In 1963 the College was incorporated as one of the three foundation colleges of The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
To complement the universities subject-oriented teaching by providing students with a balanced, holistic education in order to equip them with the values, skills, and frames of mind for meeting new challenges in a rapidly globalizing world.
Students belong to either one of the seven University Faculties. Among the four Colleges in the University, only Chung Chi College offers Music and Religion. The College campus lies to the north and east of Taipo Road, a very beautiful part of the New Territories with lush hills on one side and the quiet serenity of Tolo Harbour opposite.
The campus contains a number of services and facilities, some of which include the Centre for the Study of Religion and Chinese Society, the Integrative Basic Studies Resource Centre, the Tang Ngan Leng Centre for General Science Education, the Chapel, the library, the student center, the Lingnan Stadium and Athletic Field, ten student hostel buildings, the Multi-purpose Hall, the Multi-media Centre, the Information Technology Services Centre, the tennis court, the Lee Hysan Concert Hall, the Lake Ad Excellentiam, the Orchid Lodge, the Lin Dao Yang Memorial Garden and the Alumni Garden.
There are nine student hostels ten blocks in the College with a total capacity of 1,406, which is about 60% of the student number.
The Elisabeth Luce Moore Library, built with the generous support of the Henry Luce Foundation through the United Presbyterian Church in the United States of America, was officially dedicated on October 29, 1971 by Mr. Luce�s sister, Mrs. Elisabeth Luce Moore. The reference room stocks general and subject reference materials, indexes, abstracts, Hong Kong government documents, etc. Access to online catalogues of local and overseas libraries, electronic databases and internet sites is available via computer terminals. A microform collection � most of out-of-print materials on Chinese history, music, and religious � with microform printer/readers to use them is also available. Both the music and religion collection are considered quite significant in Southeast Asia.
The College has set up several education endowments with a view to enhance academic standards, facilitate cultural exchange, encourage the pursuit of knowledge and promote students� balanced development. Every academic year, more than 450 scholarships and prizes with a total value over 4 million Hong Kong dollars are available to Chung Chi students who show good progress in their academic work. Among these, around 40 scholarships are of an amount equivalent to full tuition fee of the current year.
The College has established Exchange Programmes with a number of universities in the United States of America, Japan and Germany, including University of Redlands, Washington and Lee University, the International Student Exchange Programme (ISEP) with about 100 universities in the USA; International Christian University, Keio University and Soka University in Japan; and University of Bonn in Germany.
